Teacher Registration
THE NEED FOR TEACHER REGISTRATION
Registration is a requirement for all BBO Teachers. It enables us to maintain a consistently high standard of dance teaching throughout the world. Registration also exists to provide confidence and trust in the Organization and to protect students, parents, teachers and the public.
Registration is recognition of status with the BBO, one of only a few government accredited awarding organisations. It shows your students that you are highly qualified and professional. It is also the best possible reassurance to parents in their selection of a dance school for their children.
Over the last 25 years the BBO has maintained a system of registering teachers, the majority of whom teach the BBO Syllabus and enter candidates for examinations. With the ever increasing regulatory demands, health and safety, child and data protection issues the BBO regularly reviews and updates its teacher registration system. In turn Teachers are required to ensure they remain fully conversant with current practise by undertaking Continuous Professional Development.
On entering the government's new qualifications credit framework (QCF), Ofqual, the regulatory authority, requires that all teachers entering candidates for examinations are qualified and adhere to a professional code of practice. The BBO must, also, ensure that all centres are compliant with the Organization’s policies and procedures and that the facilities are suitable for examination sessions.
Both the categories below are for fully qualified teachers. The only difference being that RTS allows teachers to enter students for examinations.
REGISTERED TEACHER STATUS (RTS)
Teachers are permitted to use the letters BBO – RTS after their name.
RTS is for existing BBO teachers who have entered candidates for examinations over the last two years in any dance style or at any level. This means that the organization has vetted the centre over a period and that the facilities are suitable for entering candidates. The Organization also holds the results and examiners reports which detail the standards achieved and compliance to procedures, over time, at each centre.
Visiting BBO teachers who do not have their own centre but wish to enter candidates should also hold Registered Teacher Status.
Should a teacher decide at any time to change the venue for examinations they must inform Headquarters.
Similarly, if a teacher decides not to enter students for more than two years, then Headquarters must be informed. The teacher's registration would revert to Approved Teacher Status until the examination of students is to be recommenced.

APPROVED TEACHER STATUS (ATS)
Teachers are permitted to use the letters BBO – ATS after their name.
ATS is for
- new teachers who teach but at present do not wish to enter candidates for examinations.
- new teachers who are waiting to go through the centre approval process.
- teachers who regularly teach but have not entered candidates for several years.

CENTRE APPROVAL
A "centre" is the examination venue and might not be where the students are taught.
At any time an ATS teacher may apply to Headquarters for RTS status. However, this will entail a centre approval inspection, an increased annual subscription and possible CPD requirements. Teachers would first need to study the Teachers Manual, available on the "Teachers Only" area of the website, to fully understand the processes involved in entering candidates for examinations. A team of BBO personnel are geographically spread throughout the country and are therefore in a position to visit a prospective centre. The visit will normally take a half day and the centre would be checked to see if the facilities are suitable for entering candidates. The entire process of booking an examination through to certification will be fully explained. The centre approval visit can be extended should the teacher wish to avail themselves of the expertise of the visiting assessor to ensure that their students are of the appropriate standard, understand the syllabus and genre for which they are being entered. A fee will be charged for centre approval which is dependent upon the time spent, location of the centre and any assessment requirements.
STUDENT TEACHER
This category is for trainee teachers, over the age of 17, currently undergoing the BBO teaching qualifications program. Student Teacher is a "temporary" status until a full teaching qualification has been gained. Trainee teachers who are not studying for BBO qualifications but have their accredited prior learning recognised might have to undertake a unit of the BBO's qualification which will, on completion, give them access to Approved Teacher Status. The whole process must be completed within a three year period.

ACCREDITED PRIOR LEARNING
The following will be taken into consideration when applying for either Registered Teacher Status (RTS), Approved Teacher Status (ATS) or Student Teacher and is at the discretion of the Chief Executive Officer, based on a written submission and curriculum vitae:
- Existing BBO Full Teaching Diploma (ATS only)
- A Teaching Qualification or Full Teacher Registration gained from another nationally or internationally recognised dance examining organisation
- The highest dance performance examination from any recognised national or international organisation
- The holding of a dance degree/diploma, or other relevant qualification/s
- The experience gained through vocational dance training, a professional dance career, and several years of dance teaching experience
- Teaching experience gained through the public or private dance sectors
LAPSED TEACHER REGISTRATION
If the annual subscription payment is NOT received within one year then the registration will lapse. This applies to all 3 levels of teacher status. A reinstatement fee will be charged. If registration is in danger of lapsing and there are extenuating circumstances, then a letter needs to be sent to the Chief Executive Officer explaining the situation at the earliest opportunity.
AN APPROVED CENTRE WITH SEVERAL TEACHERS
|
Every centre must have a "named RTS teacher" who is ultimately responsible for the process of entering candidates. Other teachers who also teach at the approved centre and enter candidates for examination must also hold Registered Teacher Status (RTS). The teacher who has taught the candidates will be the sole name on the reports.
